Tiger Woods Back to the Genesis Invitational

Make no mistake, it’s going to be a massive event with 120 players swinging away at the Rivera Golf Course to pull themselves forward and closer to the final hole. Tiger Woods will be making his third start this season, attracting the crowds.

But thenagain, nobody is really surprised to see him there as he has already participatedin the event ten times. True, he hasn’t really won in the past 10 or so years, but that hasn’t put him off the idea to at least try.

So, what are Woods’ chances looking at the Genesis Invitational? Decent to say the least, but he is not historically known to dominate the field. Back in 1998 and 1999, though, Woods did pull two back-to-back runners-up but nothing more impressive since, at least not in Los Angeles.

Bubba Watson: The Reigning Champion

BubbaWatson is indeed areigning champion and while he has taken 8 years to establish himself as athree-time winner and twice the Top 10 finisher, he has done it and is so farthe only person to have the same track record.

Watsonadded the title in 2014, 2016 andfinally in 2018, which definitely gives him a bit of an edge all thingsconsidered.

Dustin Johnson: A Worthy Pick

Dustin Johnson has won the invitational only once – in 2017, but he also finished the runner-up twice in 2014 and 2015. Everything indicates that he is quite capable to make his way into the finals of any big golf competition.

His 2020stats is a bit middling so far, with a T32 finish in the AT&T Pebble BeachPro-Am and T7 in the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

Brace for the Temperatures

Los Angeles is generally warm, but the 2019th edition of the tournament was marked by brass monkey’s weather with the temperatures dropping well below golfers’ comfort zone, and the wind mercilessly setting off the ball away from the holes.

It was a sight to behold. This year field reunites some of the finest names to mention still Bryson DeChambeau, Jason Day, Paul Casey, Matt Kuchar, Marc Leishman, and many others.

With nine of the world’s top ten golfers set to tee it up in the PacificPalisades, the field at the 2020 Genesis Invitational is absolutely stacked.

I’m talking comparable to any major or WGC event.

Brooks Koepka isn’t even among the top-six betting favorites to win the golftournament. World beaters like Justin Rose and Patrick Reed can be backed at anincredibly salivating price (+4000).

Tiger and Rory are both gracing us with their presence, the weather should beideal, and the layout atRiviera Country Club is among the finest in all of golf.

Are you ready to bet on this week’s PGA Tour event or what?

Let’s get started with the Genesis Invitational odds and my prediction forthe winner.

When studying the pricing from one of thebest golf bettingsites, there’s a lot to be excited about. Newly crowned world #1 RoryMcIlroy leads the way on the heels of four consecutive top-4 showings, highlighted by his playoff victory over Xander Schauffele in Shanghai.

Considering Rory has cracked the top 10 in nine of his last eleven startsworldwide, there seem to be few scenarios of him not getting into contentionthis week in SoCal.

J.B. Holmes shot 14-under par and outlasted a star-studded leaderboard thatincluded Justin Thomas (runner-up) and Rory McIlroy (T-4th). AdamScott, Hideki Matsuyama, Dustin Johnson, and Jon Rahm all landed inside the top10 as well.

Thomas began the final round with a four-stroke lead and birdied the firsthole right out of the gates, but he produced five bogeys and a double over hisnext 13 holes and eventually came up a shot short.

Tiger Woods got it to 10-under through seven holes on Sunday and was withinstriking distance, but the “Big Cat” stumbled down the stretch and wound up in atie for 15th.

Horses for Courses

When it comes to Riviera Country Club — one of the most pristine venues inthe annual PGA Tour rotation — there are some players who we just expect to playwell here. For example, Bubba Watson has won this event threetimes (2014, 2016, 2018) and has shown terrific form as of late.

Phil Mickelson is coming off a third-place finish at PebbleBeach and is looking for his third trophy at this event. Phil lost in a playoffto Charles Howell III here in 2007 before emerging as the champ in both 2008 and2009.

Dustin Johnson has consistently shredded this place up,dating back to 2014, but more on DJ in a bit.

As far as an individual who hasn’t fared as well at “Riv” compared to othertracks around the globe, Tiger Woods is still searching for his maiden victoryat the Genesis Invitational after all these years. Those wonderingwhen Tiger will win his 83rd event and officially break SamSnead’s record might have to wait a little bit longer.

With so many top players in the field and playing well, it’s not easynarrowing it down to a single choice. Then again, it’s a little bit easier onceyou examine Dustin Johnson’s track record at the PGA Tour stop nestled inbetween Brentwood and Santa Monica.

Genesis Golf Tournament 2020 Odds

I should point out DJ’s 16th-place finish at the 2018 GenesisInvitational because that’s the only time in the last six years that he didn’ttally a top 10.

The 35-year-old South Carolina native also finished 9th here in2009, 3rd in 2010, and 4th in 2012.

Now that we’re clear on Dustin Johnson’s affinity for this golf course, let’stake a look at what kind of form he’s in. Johnson has played three times in2020.

He placed 7th in Maui and 2nd in Saudi Arabia, and hewas tied for 7th after 54 holes last week in Pebble Beach.

I can’t be certain if Dustin’s wand will be of the blade or mallet varietywhen he shows up on Thursday, but I can be sure that he’ll be standing on thefirst tee beaming with confidence. After seeing Johnson installed at +1200 towin the Genesis Invitational at a lot of the top PGA Tour sportsbooks online, Iquickly pounced when I saw him at +1400 atthe BetOnlinesportsbook.
